Basic Pfrimmer

50 hours. The Basic Pfrimmer class covers the history of the Pfrimmer Deep Muscle Therapy massage technique, contraindications, body positioning, release techniques, and full-body sequences. This class is a pre-requisite for both the Pfrimmer Specifics and Advanced Pfrimmer classes. Qualifies for 50 Continuing Education Credits from the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork.

  • The Basic Pfrimmer Deep Muscle Therapy course teaches students the fundamentals of Therese Pfrimmer's massage technique. Students will learn the history and theory behind this method, which uses deep pressure to release tight connective tissue and muscles.

    The course covers the application of traditional Pfrimmer techniques, including proper body positioning for therapist and client, release techniques, and full-body sequences. Students study contraindications to identify when Pfrimmer massage is appropriate or should be avoided. They will improve palpation skills and learn how to assess client conditions and tissue tightness.

  • Through hands-on practice, students will demonstrate proficiency in Pfrimmer methods before completing the course. The Basic Pfrimmer Class provides a comprehensive overview of this advanced massage modality, helping students build skills through both didactic and practical learning experiences. Upon completion, students can apply Pfrimmer's Deep Muscle Therapy technique safely and ethically in their practice. This course qualifies as continuing education for massage therapists.

    1. Understand the history and principles of Pfrimmer Deep Muscle Therapy.

    2. Apply appropriate release techniques and body positioning.

    3. Conduct thorough assessments to determine suitability and treatment plans.

    4. Develop proper palpation skills to identify adherent connective tissue and muscles.

    5. Learn full-body Pfrimmer sequences and how to customize treatments.

    7. Discuss the legal requirements for practicing Pfrimmer massage.

    8. Provide a minimum of 2 full-body Pfrimmer sessions under instructor supervision.

  • This 50-hour course is completed in-person over five days and qualifies for 50 Continuing Education Credits from the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork.

  • • Graduation from an accredited massage therapy program of at least 500 hours or or is an MD, DO, DC, PA, RN, LPN, PT, or OT. Students must have a solid foundation in anatomy, physiology, and massage techniques

    • A massage therapy certificate or an Associate’s Degree (or higher) in a health-related field

    • Completion of at least 2-3 credit hours or 40 hours of full-body human anatomy study with proof that the class was passed with a grade of at least 75%. This provides the anatomical knowledge required to properly apply Pfrimmer massage.

    • Liability insurance to practice massage therapy. Students must provide proof of liability insurance and any licensing required in the student's location

    • Understanding of the legal requirements for practicing massage therapy in their location. Students must research the laws in their city/state and complete a form detailing the requirements in their location for performing Pfrimmer massage and charging clients.

    • Signed release waiving liability of instructors and the Pfrimmer Association. Students must sign a release acknowledging their responsibility to follow all laws and ethics standards in practicing and charging for Pfrimmer massage

    • Completion of an ethics course. An ethics course provides essential learning on appropriate behavior, client safety, confidentiality, and professionalism

Pfrimmer Specifics

10 hours. The Pfrimmer Specifics class is an extension of the Basic Pfrimmer class and teaches advanced massage techniques emphasized by the traditional Pfrimmer curriculum. This class is required for Pfrimmer certification but is not a pre-requisite for the Advanced Pfrimmer class. Qualifies for 10 Continuing Education Credits from the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork.

  • The Pfrimmer Specifics class expands on the Basic Pfrimmer Deep Muscle Therapy certification. The targeted massage therapy techniques taught in the Pfrimmer Specifics class allow practitioners to better assist clients dealing with health issues like sinus problems, colon dysfunction, leg pain, nerve inflammation, and muscle paralysis.

    This course is required for Pfrimmer certification but is not a pre-requisite for the Advanced Pfrimmer class.

  • The Pfrimmer Specifics course covers targeted techniques for addressing seven specific conditions. The class expands a massage therapist's ability to address common pain conditions and health issues. Students will practice hands-on for each of the 7 techniques and improve their palpation skills.

    1. Honey Mask - A relaxing treatment using honey to improve circulation and skin health. Honey is applied to the face and neck, then removed with warm towels. This can decrease bacteria, increase blood flow, and reduce inflammation.

    2. External Colonics - Gentle abdominal massage techniques to stimulate the colon and encourage normal bowel movements. Helps relieve constipation and improve colon function.

    3. Anterior Lower Leg - Releases muscles and fascia on the front of the lower leg like the tibialis anterior, peroneals, and shin muscles. Alleviates pain from shin splints, muscle strains, and compartment syndrome.

    4. Posterior Lower Leg - Focuses on stretching and unwinding the fascia and muscles on the back of the lower leg, including the triceps surae (soleus and gastocnemius). Helps relieve calf tightness, Achilles tendonitis, and plantar fasciitis.

    5. Sinuses - Relief for congestion using massage and light pressure around the nose, cheeks, and brow. Techniques drain the sinuses and relieve pressure by improving circulation and lymph flow.

    6. Tic Douloureux - A gentle technique for massaging the face to release the trigeminal nerve associated with this painful condition. Reduces inflammation and pain levels.

    7. Bell's Palsy - Massage therapy for relaxing the facial muscles and nerves affected by Bell's palsy. Helps decrease numbness and improve muscle function over time.

  • This 10-hour course is completed in a single day and qualifies for 10 Continuing Education Credits from the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork.

Advanced Pfrimmer

16 hours. Advanced Pfrimmer covers 12 additional techniques which enhance the participant’s ability to address their clients’ needs and deliver results more quickly and effectively. This class also teaches massage therapists how to avoid common self-injuries which may limit their ability to continue their career long-term. Qualifies for 16 Continuing Education Credits from the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork.

  • The Advanced Pfrimmer Deep Muscle Therapy course builds on the Basic Pfrimmer certification. This class teaches 12 specialized techniques developed by Therese Pfrimmer to address chronic pain and complicated client issues. Students will gain advanced palpation and assessment skills to determine when and how these methods should be applied based on client symptoms and tissue condition.

    The curriculum covers:

    • 12 advanced Pfrimmer techniques for releasing deeper adhesions and muscle tightness. These techniques provide targeted therapy for persistent, long-term pain.

    • Application of techniques based on client assessments. Students will learn how to evaluate the cause of pain and determine appropriate methods for treatment.

    • Review of endangerment sites and safety precautions. Advanced Pfrimmer massage requires vigilance to avoid sensitive areas and knowledge of high-risk zones requiring modification.

    • Critical thinking processes for developing customized treatment plans. Students will improve their ability to assess complex issues and determine a progressive course of therapy.

    • Self-care strategies to prevent injury and career burnout. Due to the physical demands of this work, students must apply proper body mechanics, stretching, and scheduling breaks.

    • How to enhance client outcomes and satisfaction using targeted therapy. Students will gain understanding of how advanced Pfrimmer techniques improve wellness, reduce pain, and facilitate healing.

    • Legal and ethical requirements for performing and charging for advanced modalities. Students must understand the additional responsibilities that come with specialized skills.

  • 1. Apply 12 advanced Pfrimmer techniques proficiently based on client needs.

    2. Improve palpation and critical thinking skills for complex assessments and treatment planning.

    3. Recognize endangerment sites and take appropriate precautions to avoid injury.

    4. Develop customized treatment programs that incorporate full-body and targeted Pfrimmer therapy.

Animal Pfrimmer

16 hours. The Animal Pfrimmer class helps practitioners expand their practice of Pfrimmer techniques for animals as well as humans. Participants will learn to apply their knowledge of Pfrimmer to different musculoskeletal (canine, feline, and equine) structures by analyzing the structural differences of each animal. Qualifies for 16 Continuing Education Credits from the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork.

  • The Animal Pfrimmer Deep Muscle Therapy course teaches students how to apply the Pfrimmer massage technique to canine, feline, and equine patients. This class builds on the Basic and Advanced Pfrimmer certifications by adapting the methods for animal anatomy and physiology.

    Students will study the musculoskeletal structures of dogs, cats, and horses to analyze differences from human clients. The curriculum covers appropriate pressure, patterns, and positioning based on each animal. Students will learn safety precautions, calming techniques, and how to secure animals for effective treatment. The course provides an overview of common conditions in animals that can benefit from Pfrimmer therapy.

  • 1. Apply Pfrimmer massage techniques to canine, feline, and equine patients based on anatomical differences. Students will adapt methods and pressure appropriately for each animal.

    2. Recognize safety issues, sensitive areas, and contraindications for animal patients. Students must understand how to avoid injury to the animal and therapist during treatment.

    3. Develop customized treatment plans based on assessments of animal mobility, gait, and behaviors. Students will determine appropriate starting points and target areas based on evaluations of each animal.

    4. Discuss nutritional and alternative recommendations to enhance animal wellness. Students will provide clients with suggestions to improve animal health, flexibility, and comfort.

    5. Explain the benefits of Pfrimmer massage for common animal conditions like arthritis, hip dysplasia, anxiety, and chronic pain. Students will articulate how Pfrimmer therapy facilitates healing and provides natural relief for animals.

    6. Demonstrate proficiency in techniques for at least 2 types of animals under instructor supervision. Students will perform Pfrimmer massage for either canine, feline, or equine patients.

    7. Review requirements for practicing animal massage therapy. Students will understand legal, insurance, and professional organization recommendations to offer Pfrimmer massage for animals.

  • This 16-hour course is completed over two days and qualifies for 16 Continuing Education Credits from the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork.

  • • Completion of the 50-hour Basic Pfrimmer course and its associated requirements

Meet Your Instructors

Jackie Himelick, PhD

Jackie's early career as a Licensed Practical Nurse gave her insight into how the body works and responds to health issues. Her work in the medical field taught her that natural healing methods are often gentler and more effective, she enrolled in the Alexandria School of Scientific Therapeutics and graduated in 1996. Jackie obtained a Ph.D. in Natural Health in 2013, specializing in Homeopathy and Herbal Medicine.

Jackie is the owner of Abundant Life Holistics, LLC. She is a member of the Association of Bodywork & Massage Professionals (ABMP) and serves as chairperson for the Therese C. Pfrimmer International Association of Deep Muscle Therapists, and as a member of the Board of Directors for the Alexandria School of Scientific Therapeutics. Jackie is an instructor of Infant and Pregnancy Massage, Labor Support and Baby's First Massage, Active Isolated Stretching, Animal Nutrition, Aromatherapy, and Pfrimmer Deep Muscle Therapy.  She also instructs basic Homeopathy, Basic Flower Essences and uses Nutrition Response Testing in a proficient manner to help others enjoy a higher level of health.

Michelle Himelick

Michelle graduated from the Alexandria School of Scientific Therapeutics in 1998 after receiving more than 500 hours of instruction in anatomy, physiology, nutrition, homeopathy, various massage techniques, and many others. Since that time, she has specialized in providing Pfrimmer Deep Muscle therapy for her clients. She has also received continuing education in reflexology, Craniosacral Therapy, SomatoEmotional Release, and Active Isolated Stretching, among others. Michelle is a member of the American Massage Therapy Association and serves as the Connections Secretary for the Therese C. Pfrimmer International Association of Deep Muscle Therapy.

  • You can register for Pfrimmer courses on our website by clicking "Register Now" on the class page and filling out the online registration form. Submit your payment via PayPal or credit card to complete your enrollment.

    For the Basic Pfrimmer Class, registration closes 4 weeks before the start date of the class.

    Registration for all other classes closes one week before the date of the class.

  • Course fees cover your enrollment in the Pfrimmer class, an official course manual, certificate of completion, and instructor guidance. Course fees do not include travel, lodging, or food expenses.

  • For Pfrimmer courses, we require 14 days written notice by email prior to the start date of your class for a full refund minus a $100 administrative fee. Cancellations less than 14 days will receive a 50% refund of tuition paid. No refunds will be issued for cancellations once the course has begun or for non-attendance. Refunds will be issued within 2 weeks of the scheduled course start date.
